Greek authorities detained four Chinese citizens near the Hellenic Aerospace Industry (HAI) site in Tanagra for allegedly taking photographs of military facilities, including Rafale fighter jets. One woman was among the four individuals who were taken into custody. The group was caught capturing images close to the 114th Combat Wing base, raising concerns about possible intelligence gathering.
Security guards at HAI first noticed the suspicious behaviour and asked the individuals to leave. However, they moved near the bridge and continued taking pictures. The Hellenic Air Force Police quickly intervened, detained them, and handed them over to the local police in Tanagra.
Authorities discovered a substantial amount of photographic content in the group's possession. Investigators are currently trying to determine whether this was a one-off incident or part of a larger intelligence operation. Greek officials are treating the case seriously due to the sensitive nature of the materials involved.
The Rafale jet, manufactured by France’s Dassault Aviation, is actively used by India and has been spotlighted in recent military exercises, including “Operation Sindoor”. Greece also shares strong defence ties with India, taking part in joint exercises of naval and air such as Tarang Shakti and INIOCHOS.
This arrest follows broader concerns over China’s reported global campaign to damage the reputation of the Rafale fighter. A report by the Associated Press claims that Chinese embassies have been working to discredit the aircraft’s performance, especially after India used Rafales in a recent operation against Pakistan.
French intelligence alleges that China used embassy staff, social media, and fake digital content to mislead potential Rafale buyers and promote Chinese alternatives. France’s Defence Ministry called the campaign an attempt to harm the credibility of French defence technology and partnerships.
China’s Ministry of Defence has denied all claims, calling them “groundless”. It asserted that its defence exports are responsible and meant for security, not for competing through disinformation. It criticised Western narratives as confrontational and rooted in insecurity.
